LG Electronics said on Tuesday it has set up an experience space in Jeju for its mobility space solution “Spielraum”, which integrates its AI home solution into a vehicle. Spielraum means “play space” in German, and is a mobility solution that combines LG Electronics’ appliances and furniture in a Kia PV5 vehicle. Customers can freely combine appliances and furniture depending on their lifestyle. The display, an on-site experience programme to expand customer touchpoints, runs through late August at Haevichi Hotel & Resort Jeju.

The display reveals the outdoor-focused “Spielraum Glow Cabin”. It installs a refrigerator, lightwave oven and wine cellar inside the vehicle, and users can control the appliances with voice commands through LG Electronics’ AI hub, LG ThinQ On. LG Electronics and Kia signed a memorandum of understanding last year at the Seoul Mobility Show to develop mobility space solutions and first unveiled Spielraum. The two companies are now working together with the goal of advancing the solution and commercialising it.

LG Electronics is expanding the spaces where it applies its AI home solution beyond vehicles. Alongside Spielraum, the modular home “Smart Cottage” is a representative example. Smart Cottage is a modular home that connects premium appliances, an air-conditioning system and IoT devices, and controls the entire space through the LG ThinQ app. It started as a personal second home, but has recently expanded its business scope into the B2B market, including high-end accommodation facilities.

Last year, it launched 26-square-meter and 53-square-meter models to improve price competitiveness, and it plans to introduce a new model in the 66-square-meter range next month. The new model is a product that has both economic efficiency and residential comfort, and targets demand for both country homes and B2B at the same time. LG Electronics plans to apply AI to its understanding of space and know-how accumulated over the past 70 years in its appliance business and expand its solutions into various living spaces, including vehicles and modular housing.

O Jun-hwan (오준환), head of HS CX, said, “We will provide Spielraum’s own differentiated space experience by combining AI appliances and mobility so customers can stay comfortably as if they were at home.”
