[Digital Today reporter Yoonseo Lee] Google has introduced a usage graph and a new limit system for its Gemini artificial intelligence model.

On May 21, local time, IT outlet TechRadar reported that users can now check their remaining limit and the next renewal time under the "Data usage" item in the settings menu.

The key change is that it visualises AI usage that was previously hard to gauge. When users generate images in Gemini, usage is deducted immediately. One user said they saw the limit drop by 1 percent each time they created an image. The user said there was still room before reaching the actual limit, but the display of usage changed how they used the service.

Gemini applies a usage window that renews every 5 hours instead of an existing daily limit. Total usage is calculated within a weekly limit. Google explained on its support page that factors such as prompt complexity, features used and chat length are reflected in usage calculations.

Under this structure, usage can rise faster the longer a user continues in the same chat. That is because Gemini takes existing conversation context into account when processing requests. An analysis says that for longer tasks it could be more advantageous for managing limits to split work across multiple chats rather than continuing in a single thread.

The company also set out specific features that consume more of the allowance. Media generation such as image, video and music creation, deep research and using the pro model are among them. High-compute features such as extended thinking and deep think mode can deduct usage faster. As a result, choosing standard mode for tasks that do not require complex reasoning could be advantageous for managing limits.

Limits also differ by subscription plan. Free users get a standard limit. AI Plus is 2 times the standard level, and AI Pro is around 4 times. AI Ultra offers limits that are 5 times or 20 times higher than the standard level.

The change shows how AI services are being run. Even when generative AI services had usage restrictions, users often found it hard to check them directly. With remaining usage displayed on screen, the effect of each request on the limit has become clearer.

It also aligns with a common pattern in which consumer behaviour changes when numbers are disclosed. When remaining resources are shown in real time, such as battery level or screen time, users become more conscious of consumption. Users come to see AI not as a near-unlimited tool but as a limited service that requires real computing resources.

In this trend, Google's new feature could become a factor that changes the Gemini user experience. That is because the way usage is revealed, rather than the feature itself, can change user behaviour. Observers say that as AI could one day be less easily available and more expensive than it is now, it may be better in the long run to get used to thinking of AI as a limited resource.
