[DigitalToday reporter Hyunwoo Choo (추현우)] Tesla has officially confirmed it will provide its driver-assistance system FSD in China, but it did not disclose when it will actually be rolled out. InsideEVs, an electric vehicle-focused outlet, reported on May 21 that Tesla said in a post on X that “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” is available in China.

FSD is a hands-free driver-assistance feature that requires the driver to keep watching the road. It is described as being available in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, China, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, South Korea and Lithuania.

In China, its introduction was delayed for years due to regulatory procedures. Still, immediately after the announcement, confusion persisted among local drivers over whether it was actually usable. Some users said the feature was not yet activated in their vehicles.

Tesla did not disclose the final rollout schedule and method in China. In China, it sells the FSD package as a one-time purchase for about $9,400. In other markets such as the United States, it has switched to a subscription-only model.

In China, some functions known as FSD have previously been offered under other names such as “intelligent assisted driving.” In Europe, the Netherlands recently became the first to allow Tesla’s hands-free system, followed by Lithuania. It is also available in South Korea, but only U.S.-made vehicles such as the Model S and Model X support FSD. The function remains restricted on the Model 3 and Model Y imported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory.

Tesla’s formalisation of FSD availability in China is a signal that it has cleared an institutional hurdle, but progress toward commercialisation can only be gauged once the actual rollout schedule is disclosed, the outlet said.
