Anthropic said its first-quarter revenue and usage grew 80-fold from a year earlier.

Business Insider reported on May 6 that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei (다리오 아모데이) disclosed the figure in a talk at a developer event in San Francisco titled "Code with Claude".

Amodei also voiced a half-joking concern about the pace. "This kind of hypergrowth is too hard to handle," he said. "It might even be better to grow by about 10 times."

Claude Code, a coding-focused service, is at the centre of the growth. Anthropic explained that revenue jumped as the service spread quickly in recent months. Amodei said software engineers are the group that adopts new tools the fastest, and that the market's current focus on coding aligns with that trend.

He said the trend would not remain confined to software development. Amodei described the current moment as a precursor to how technology spreads across the broader economy.

Anthropic's strategy is also being shaped accordingly. The company said earlier on May 6 it secured 300 megawatts of new computing resources at SpaceX's "Colossus One" data centre. With additional chips secured, Claude Code is expected to have more operating headroom. Chief Product Officer Amy Bhatia (아미 보라) said the newly secured chips would help expand developers' daily Claude Code workload processing.

The moves also tie into competition in the generative AI market. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI staff, was seen as trailing OpenAI, backed by ChatGPT, during the early spread of generative AI. That changed in late 2025 as Claude Code quickly gained popularity among developers, and revenue growth then steepened further.

Anthropic and OpenAI are now competing head-on for developers and enterprise AI customers. With both facing huge costs for large-scale model training and inference, expanding a stable customer base has emerged as a key task for their businesses. Against that backdrop, coding AI is emerging as a front not only for features but also for quickly lifting usage and revenue.

Amodei is also known as someone who has strongly warned about the speed and impact of AI adoption. In March 2025, he predicted that virtually all code could be written by AI within a year. At the event, he reaffirmed his view that rapid adoption in coding could spread to broader industries.

Anthropic plans to continue its in-person developer events in San Francisco on May 7. Whether it can translate Claude Code's momentum into longer usage time and expanded computing resources is emerging as a key variable in future competition.
