Coinbase layer2 blockchain Base (BASE)

Base, an Ethereum layer2 network led by Coinbase, is working with zero-knowledge (ZK) technology provider Succinct to strengthen security, The Block reported on Sunday.

Base will add Succinct’s SP1 zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM) and a trusted execution environment (TEE). Base currently operates as an optimistic rollup. An optimistic rollup assumes transactions are valid and verifies invalid transactions within a dispute period. The drawback has been that disputes can take several days.

ZK rollups instead provide immediate cryptographic proof that a batch of transactions was processed correctly. They prove validity from the start without a dispute period. Base said the integration can replace a multi-day challenge period with cryptographic finality, achieve one-day finality and provide a more reliable way to move billions of dollars in assets to the Ethereum mainnet.

Adopting Succinct’s technology does not mean Base will immediately switch to a ZK rollup. Base plans to keep its existing optimistic rollup structure while strengthening it with zero-knowledge proofs to improve security and resilience.

Wilson Cusack (윌슨 커삭), head of Base chain, said, "As the network grows, the need to keep strengthening the infrastructure that users and developers rely on every day has also grown," adding, "Introducing ZK proofs is a meaningful step to improve network security and resilience."
