The government said it is sounding out Anthropic and OpenAI about joining a cooperation table to respond to threats posed by Anthropic’s artificial intelligence (AI) model Mythos.

Ryu Je-myung (류제명), second vice minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, met reporters on Tuesday at the 2026 World IT Show at COEX in Seoul and said the government is discussing their formal participation in a cooperation table on security AI models.

Anthropic’s Mythos and OpenAI’s GPT-5.4-Cyber are security-focused AI models that have shocked the world. Mythos is known for finding a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD, which is known for strong security, and is said to show outstanding performance in discovering security vulnerabilities and carrying out attacks.

Anthropic and OpenAI have made the models available only to some institutions, security experts and corporate clients, but concerns are growing that they could become a top-level "hacker" worldwide if misused.

The South Korean government is also raising its response level. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Financial Services Commission previously held an emergency meeting to check pending issues and discussed ways to strengthen security policies with major companies. The National AI Strategy Committee is discussing ways to elevate the "independent AI foundation model" project as part of strengthening security capabilities.

Ryu said direct information sharing would be needed in some way. He said that even without sharing, vigilance must be maintained over the impact of AI models such as Mythos on security, and that the government is keeping watch with industry and chief information security officers.

Ryu also attended the opening ceremony of the World IT Show and toured booths run by participating companies. He said it was encouraging that telecom companies were investing very actively in AI, adding that active investments by South Korean telecom companies in data centres and an AI full-stack ecosystem were meaningful.

Ryu added that it was reassuring to see domestic neural processing units (NPUs) showing confidence that they would play a key role in South Korea’s AI ecosystem.
