OpenAI has launched a $100-a-month Pro plan that significantly increases usage for its AI coding assistant Codex, CNBC reported on April 9. The move considers competition with Anthropic's Claude Code.
The new plan offers five times the Codex usage of the existing $20-a-month Plus plan. OpenAI said the Plus plan is optimised for everyday Codex use, and the new plan is an upgrade path for heavier users.
With the launch, ChatGPT consumer plans have expanded to five tiers: Free, Go, Plus, the new Pro, and the existing $200-a-month Pro.
Anthropic has operated a four-tier pricing model starting with a free option since launching Claude Code in May 2025. Its top plans are $100-a-month Max 5x and $200-a-month Max 20x. Claude Code's annualised revenue surpassed $2.5 billion as of February and rose more than 100 percent from early 2026.
OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman (샘 알트먼) said on X on April 7 that Codex weekly users reached 3 million.
