The Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) said on Tuesday it published an "ICT Standardisation Promotion Framework Analysis Report - Major Countries Edition" that comprehensively analyses standardisation policy trends in major countries.

The report was planned to provide an at-a-glance look at policy directions in major countries at a time when global competition over standards in key digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), 6G and quantum is directly linked to industrial competitiveness, supply chains, regulatory responses and early market capture.

According to the report, major economies around the world commonly place "standards" front and centre as a key tool of industrial strategy and technology security.

The report, in particular, provides a comprehensive analysis of the United States' public-private cooperation ecosystem, the EU's regulation-linked standardisation and China's approach to managing long-term goals. It also suggested South Korea should refine its national standardisation promotion framework.

It also stressed the need to design standardisation in parallel from the early stages of technology development, expand participation in standardisation not only by large companies but also by small and medium-sized firms and startups, and systematically support the training of specialised personnel, meeting responses, entry into chair groups, and forum and consortium activities.

Through such efforts, it assessed that South Korea can build a virtuous cycle in which national research and development results lead to international standards and wider adoption in domestic industry. It said linking even forum and consortium activities that lead to de facto standards is needed to increase practical influence.

TTA Chairman Seung-hyun Son (손승현) said, "Standards are strategic assets that go beyond technical documents and directly affect industrial competitiveness, exports, supply chains and digital trade." He added, "I hope this report will serve as practical reference material for designing our direction for standardisation."
