Amazon is pursuing an investment in OpenAI worth tens of billions of dollars. The two companies are also discussing a contract for OpenAI to assign dedicated researchers and engineers to develop customised models for Amazon's own AI products, The Information reported on Feb. 4, citing sources.

The Information said the deal could allow AI products such as the Alexa voice assistant to use customised OpenAI models.

From OpenAI's perspective, such a contract could help boost revenue. But The Information said it could also result in a spread of company resources as competition with Google and Anthropic intensifies.

It was not clear how much of a discount Amazon would receive while using a customised model developed by OpenAI, the report said.

Amazon has used Anthropic AI models for personal and corporate AI products such as a shopping assistant, an AI coding agent and an enterprise data search tool. Amazon has poured nearly $10 billion into Anthropic so far for deeper cooperation.

Even so, Amazon employees have faced various constraints in optimising Anthropic models. The Information said Amazon did not receive special benefits from Anthropic like those Microsoft received from OpenAI.
