Anthropic has signalled it will take legal action to oppose the U.S. Defense Department's designation of the company as a supply chain risk, TechCrunch reported on Thursday.

Dario Amodei (다리오 아모데이), Anthropic's CEO, said the Pentagon's decision was legally unreasonable and would be contested in federal court. The decision is the result of escalating conflict between the Defense Department and Anthropic over control of AI systems. Anthropic opposed the use of Claude AI for mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons, but the Defense Department argued it should be able to use AI for all lawful purposes. Companies designated as a supply chain risk may be restricted from signing contracts with the Defense Department.

Amodei said the designation applies only when directly related to Defense Department contracts and does not affect Anthropic's overall business.
