The KOSPI opened lower on Tuesday but extended gains to reclaim the 4,900 level and set a record closing high. Hyundai Motor surged more than 14 percent, extending its rise for a second straight session.
The KOSPI ended up 24.18 points, or 0.49 percent, at 4,909.93.
The index opened down 76.81 points, or 1.57 percent, at 4,808.94. It moved between gains and losses before extending gains.
In the market, foreigners and institutions were net buyers of 445.6 billion won and 321.7 billion won, respectively, while individuals were net sellers of 996.2 billion won.
Gains and losses were roughly balanced among the top KOSPI market-cap stocks.
Samsung Electronics rose 2.96 percent to close at 149,500 won, while SK Hynix fell 0.40 percent to 740,000 won. Hyundai Motor gained 14.61 percent, the biggest rise.
Hanwha Aerospace rose 0.46 percent, Kia gained 5.0 percent and SK Square climbed 0.70 percent. LG Energy Solution fell 2.11 percent, Samsung Biologics slipped 2.45 percent, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries dropped 1.56 percent and Doosan Enerbility declined 4.20 percent.
