South Korea’s National Science Museum said on March 3 it was selected for the second phase of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Regional Culture Promotion Agency’s Local 100 project. It was selected for a second consecutive time following the first phase.

Local 100 is a project that selects 100 attractive regional cultural spaces through a public-participation online vote and expert review to identify and promote distinctive local cultural resources.

The museum has worked to spread science culture by adopting a joint statement on the role of science museums in the AI era at the 15th International Science Museum Symposium (ISSM) last year and running hands-on programmes featuring the latest science and technology such as robots and drones. This year, it plans to expand an AI special exhibition on climate and ecological issues and youth challenge programmes.

Kwon Seok-min (권석민), director of the National Science Museum, said the consecutive selection shows the museum is earning public trust as a regional hub for science culture. He said it will further strengthen its role as a public platform linking science and regions, and technology and citizens.
