LG Electronics is pushing to supply a total cooling solution for a planned AI data centre in Wanju County, North Jeolla Province, based on its HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) technology.
LG Electronics said on Saturday it signed a memorandum of understanding with Wanju County, Technogreen and KEPCO KDN to advance the Wanju data centre construction project.
The project to build a 20-megawatt AI data centre will involve a total investment of 280 billion won through 2029. It recently passed a final review of a power grid impact assessment by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment.
LG Electronics plans to supply a range of industrial HVAC solutions, including ultra-large chillers, a key facility that efficiently cools and controls the massive heat generated in AI data centres. It also plans to supply computer room air handling units to control temperature and humidity inside the data centre and liquid cooling solutions, including coolant distribution units.
Technogreen will build and operate the data centre, while Wanju County will provide permits and administrative support related to the project. KEPCO KDN will handle work to secure stable power supply and build an operating system. In particular, LG Electronics said it will actively participate beyond its existing business areas such as the production, development and supply of HVAC products optimised for AI data centres. It said it plans to take part in design work that determines the selection and placement of AI data centre cooling solutions, the establishment and operation of building management solutions, and maintenance, repair and operations services, as part of a strategy to secure various business opportunities.
LG Electronics highlighted its core components technology as part of the competitiveness of its HVAC solutions. It said it develops and manufactures in-house high-performance, high-efficiency key air-conditioning components such as compressors, motors, fan motors and drives, and continues active R&D investment to further advance core HVAC technologies including heat exchangers, inverters and heat pumps.
LG Electronics said orders related to AI data centres have expanded in major global markets including the United States, and that last year its data centre chiller orders rose to three times the level of the previous year.
Jae-sung Lee (이재성), head of LG Electronics' ES Business Division, said, "Based on LG Electronics' HVAC solutions technology and competitiveness, represented by stability and efficiency, we will continue to expand business opportunities related to AI data centres."
