Naver said on Wednesday it will build a cooperation system with Korea Expressway Corp, Kakao Mobility, T Map Mobility and others to share information on highway accidents and unexpected incidents.

The agreement, titled a business pact to form a public-private traffic safety data-sharing consultative body, was signed at Gangneung Convention Center, with Naver, navigation operators and Korea Expressway Corp taking part.

Under the agreement, the parties will cooperate on data sharing to prevent secondary accidents and respond to dangerous situations, standardising and building linkage systems for traffic safety data, and demonstrating traffic safety technologies and expanding services.

Navigation operators including Naver will send Korea Expressway Corp data believed to indicate an accident. The expressway operator will confirm whether there is an actual accident or unexpected incident through CCTV and other means, then provide confirmed information back to navigation operators.

Naver plans to link the information with Naver Map to alert drivers to dangerous situations.

It will also review ways to deliver traffic safety information more quickly by connecting Naver Map functions such as user reports with the expressway operator's traffic information system.

Naver Map currently provides real-time road disruption information such as accidents, controls and construction, as well as disaster information and alerts for areas with frequent deliberate accidents.

Jeong Kyung-hwa (정경화), a Naver Map leader, said it would upgrade services through the agreement so users can receive highway hazard information more accurately and quickly.
