Apple's new iPhone Duo smartphone will add the Reachability feature to help one-handed operation. It will not be available at the time of the product launch and is expected to be introduced through a software update in the second half of this year.

On Oct. 21, IT outlet 9to5Mac reported that the iPhone Duo will be released on Oct. 23, but the new Reachability feature Apple is preparing will not be provided in time for the launch schedule.

Reachability was first introduced in 2014 with the release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Swiping down on the bottom of the screen moves the interface down, making it easier to operate elements at the top of the display.

The new feature for the iPhone Duo is expected to move the interface horizontally rather than vertically, widening the range within reach. It is intended to support users who have difficulty operating elements on the left or right edge of the screen.

The backdrop is the iPhone Duo's wide screen. Both the outer and inner displays are wider than existing iPhones, raising concerns that one-handed use could be difficult. There has also been criticism that the interface layout favors right-handed users.

U.S. IT industry experts pointed to the iPhone Duo's two displays being wider than other iPhones as a concern for some users. Another person also said a product review confirmed a right-handed-focused interface design.

The new Reachability is expected to serve as a software supplement for operational inconvenience that could arise on the iPhone Duo's wide screen. It remains to be seen after launch how much the feature will reduce problems operating the left and right edges.
