SK Telecom is working with domestic universities and research institutes to strengthen the mathematical reasoning ability of its proprietary AI foundation model, A.X K2, and take on difficult mathematics problems.
SKT will hold a technical exchange meeting on Oct. 22 at its headquarters in Euljiro, Seoul, with professors and researchers from Seoul National University and KAIST. It will discuss research on difficult mathematics problems using A.X K2 and ways to advance the model.
Researchers in mathematics and AI from Seoul National University, KAIST and the Korea Institute for Advanced Study will take part in the project. SKT will support A.X K2 in learning specialised knowledge by subfield of mathematics through the cooperation. It will also use a model that complements and advances the existing model's specialised knowledge and reasoning ability to challenge difficult mathematics problems.
Mathematical reasoning capabilities will also be used to advance agentic AI. It will improve AI's ability to verify the validity of judgments and results as it establishes plans to solve complex problems and carries out multi-step tasks.
In the long term, it will also lay the groundwork for research into recursive self-improvement, or RSI, in which AI improves its own capabilities and uses them for the next stage of development. The goal is to secure mathematical capabilities comparable to top global AI models and implement AI agents that develop on their own.
Kim Tae-yoon (김태윤), who is in charge of SKT's foundation model, said, "We are actively promoting industry-academia cooperation in the field of mathematics to improve our proprietary foundation model's ability to solve real problems." He added, "Through joint research with specialised researchers, we will continue to advance our agentic AI capabilities."
