IT market research firm Gartner unveiled 10 strategic technology trends that companies should watch in 2027. It named large quantitative models, voice reasoning models, world models, AI context platforms, AI coding agent harnesses, AI agent identity, autonomous exposure remediation, sovereign tech, disposable applications and wetware as a service.

Large Quantitative Models (LQM) are a modular hybrid neural-network architecture designed to process and analyse quantitative data. They support decision-making based on proactive simulations, moving away from reactive problem-solving.

Gene Alvarez (진 알바레즈), a senior vice president analyst at Gartner, said, “This sophisticated approach delivers business agility not seen before. Companies can safely introduce autonomous prediction functions even in heavily regulated industries such as finance and healthcare,” he explained.

It is a voice AI system that directly analyses audio to grasp context and intent across an entire conversation and determine the next action.

Alvarez said, “Voice remains the channel where the most interactions take place in companies. But even though customer support automation has advanced over the past decade, accuracy, speed and resolution rates have not met the level companies require.” He added, “Voice reasoning models can close this gap at scale and enable automation even for conversations that require complex, high-level judgement.”

World models enable machines to understand space, time and causality through a new approach that prioritises physics.

AI context platforms provide contextual information AI agents need to interpret inputs, make decisions and take actions aligned with business goals. Gartner forecast that by 2027, companies that prioritise semantics in AI-ready data could raise agentic AI accuracy by up to 80 percent and cut costs by up to 60 percent.

An AI coding agent harness is a closed-loop control system that manages the actions of development agents operating autonomously across the software development lifecycle. Without a dedicated harness, developers must directly verify AI-generated output. Gartner said “governance inversion” can occur in this process, increasing costs and potentially offsetting productivity gains from adopting AI.

AI agents independently perform tasks on behalf of multiple people. Gartner said serious security vulnerabilities can arise in existing systems that cannot provide just-in-time access permissions. It forecast that by 2028, 25 percent of corporate security breaches will stem from AI agent misuse driven by unmanaged machine privileges and existing credential practices. Alvarez said, “By applying dynamic identity control, companies can replace high-risk static credentials with dynamic access permissions controlled by policy.” He added, “AI agent identity links models, prompts and credentials to an agent’s actions to ensure trust and accountability.”

Autonomous Exposure Remediation (AER) combines AI and automation to find security vulnerabilities across a company’s digital environment, prioritise them and fix them. The system automatically tests patches or virtual patches and deploys them in production environments.

Sovereign Tech (SovTech) refers to hardware, software, databases and AI models designed technically and legally to provide a practical exit strategy from core vendors. Gartner predicted that by 2030, more than 75 percent of companies outside the United States will adopt digital sovereignty strategies and shift core workloads to reduce geopolitical risk and vendor lock-in risk.

Disposable applications are software applications developed for a specific business purpose and deliberately designed to end use once that purpose is achieved or is no longer valid.

Alvarez said, “Switching to disposable applications completely changes how software is purchased, designed and budgeted.” He added, “Application portfolios will also shift from long-term legacy investment targets to dynamic systems.”

Traditional silicon-based computing hardware has limits in scaling enterprise AI without end due to unsustainable environmental and energy demands. Wetware as a Service is a new operating model that provides cloud-based remote access to biological or synthetic biological systems for computing. Gartner said these hosted organic processors use the natural plasticity of biochemical networks to run complex algorithms with very high energy efficiency.
