Korea's Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) is strengthening cooperation with Taiwan's Telecommunications Association of Information and Communication Standards (TAICS) on 6G international standardisation.

TTA said on Oct. 21 that it held the '8th TTA-TAICS International Joint Workshop' with TAICS in Taipei on Oct. 20 and is pushing to expand standardisation cooperation between the two organisations. TTA and TAICS have regularly held joint workshops since 2019 to cooperate on international mobile communications standardisation.

This year's workshop was held under the theme of '6G standards and technology development'. Experts from telecom operators, manufacturers, academia and research institutes in Korea and Taiwan took part and shared 6G standardisation strategies and directions for developing key technologies.

Key discussion areas included AI-based network and service technologies, evolution technologies for 6G radio access networks (RAN), and communications-sensing convergence and semantic communications technologies. The two sides in particular exchanged views on AI-based communications technologies under discussion at 3GPP and agreed to continue cooperating to identify joint standardisation tasks.

The two organisations also set up a session to expand the scope of their existing memorandum of understanding. They newly reflected 3 major areas of focused cooperation in the agreement signed in 2017: sharing standardisation strategies and experience and holding joint events; improving the efficiency of standards development using ICT technologies; and identifying and spreading best practices in standardisation.

TTA Chairman Seung-hyun Sohn (손승현) said, "We will continue to strengthen global cooperation channels to secure leadership in international standardisation in the 6G era."
