Capcom's popular survival horror game "Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition" has been released on Nintendo Switch 2. It has been praised for portability and overall completion, but criticised for its graphics and frame drops in some sections.

On Oct. 20, IT outlet TechRadar reported that the Switch 2 version of "Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition," released on Oct. 16, keeps the original's strong gameplay while also revealing limitations tied to hardware performance. The title is a port of the 2023 remake of "Resident Evil 4." Players can enjoy protagonist Leon Kennedy's combat and puzzles, and the tense story, as in the original.

The biggest drawback is texture pop-in. Trees and cliffs in the distance appeared in low resolution, then suddenly became sharp when approached. It occurred in both docked and handheld modes.

Intermittent frame drops were also observed. In a cave with flickering purple lights, screen movement became unnatural for 1 to 2 seconds, and the motions of distant enemies were not smooth.

Still, performance during combat was generally stable. The outlet said cases in which frame drops caused a disadvantage in actual engagements were rare.

The game on Switch 2 also supports motion controls using the gyro sensor. Vertical aiming was accurate and responsive, but horizontal aiming was relatively sluggish. Standard controller controls were stable, and fine adjustments are available in settings.

Image quality was relatively good in docked mode. In handheld mode, some backgrounds were less detailed, but character models and the depiction of dark environments were solid. It also supports HDR.

The Gold Edition includes the main game and major downloadable content, including "Separate Ways," additional content that tells Ada Wong's story.

The outlet said the overall Switch 2 experience is closer to the PlayStation 4 version than the PlayStation 5 version.

It may disappoint users who want top-tier graphics, but it concluded it is an attractive choice for those who want to enjoy a classic horror game while on the move.
