Toyota plans to produce a battery-electric version of its global best-selling Corolla from 2028 in China. It aims to accelerate its push into China’s EV market by using a platform that supports EVs, hybrids and internal combustion models.

Electrek reported on Oct. 19 that Toyota is pursuing production of the next-generation Corolla through FAW Toyota, a joint venture it set up with Chinese state-owned automaker FAW Group.

The Corolla is Toyota’s flagship model, with more than 57 million sold worldwide since its launch in 1966. The next-generation model is expected to offer multiple powertrains, including a battery-electric vehicle, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), a conventional hybrid and gasoline versions.

The key is Toyota’s multi-pathway platform. It supports different drivetrains, such as EVs and internal combustion engines, allowing production to be adjusted flexibly according to market demand. Toyota expects local production in China to reduce development time and costs.

Toyota unveiled a next-generation Corolla concept at the Japan Mobility Show in October last year. Koji Sato (사토 고지), who was CEO at the time, said, "I will keep the Corolla a car for everyone," stressing that it would offer multiple powertrains.

The new Corolla moves away from the existing, conservative sedan design with a low, sleek exterior like a sports car. The possibility has been raised that, in addition to a sedan, a hatchback, a crossover and a high-performance GR model could also be developed.

The EV model is expected to come with single- and dual-motor setups and a minimum range of 250 miles, or about 402 km. The hybrid is expected to use a new 1.5-litre engine, raising fuel efficiency by 10 to 20 percent from the current model. Battery capacity, official range, price and other detailed specifications have not yet been disclosed.

Toyota is also pushing to produce next-generation electric vehicles and range-extended electric vehicles under its Lexus brand in China from 2027.

The next-generation Corolla is expected to be unveiled in 2027 and launched as a 2028 model. Plans for overseas launches, including in the United States, have not been confirmed.
