LG Electronics is moving to target the global traffic safety solutions market with vehicle-to-everything communications technology aimed at reducing traffic accidents. LG Electronics said on Oct. 20 it showcased a next-generation traffic safety solution through a live road-driving demonstration at the 2026 ITS World Congress, which opened in Gangneung, Gangwon province. The five-day event is the world’s largest gathering where government, corporate and academic experts from around the world share intelligent transportation systems technology and policy, and it is held annually in rotation across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
The solution used for the demonstration combines V2X, a technology in which vehicles directly exchange information with other vehicles or road infrastructure, and V2N, a technology that connects vehicles to cloud servers via mobile networks. Participants who applied in advance ride in a demonstration vehicle for a roughly 2.6 km route. The company said they can experience the process of the vehicle detecting hazards in advance and alerting the driver, including broken-down or stopped vehicles, roadworks, severe weather, approaching ambulances and risks of collisions with pedestrians.
V2X is fast to respond because dedicated devices directly exchange information without going through a separate communications network. Installing a relay station at one location effectively serves as a traffic control center for nearby vehicles. Because V2N uses mobile networks, it provides information across a wider area on broken-down vehicles, construction zones, weather and traffic signals. LG Electronics said applying the two methods together complements each other’s weaknesses.
Within the communications range of roadside base stations installed along roadsides, at traffic lights and on utility poles that communicate directly with vehicles, the system uses together the information collected via V2X and V2N. In areas where direct communications are difficult, V2N delivers hazard information. Vehicles can identify surrounding risks without interruption even when the communications environment changes. The solution also met the top-grade criteria of Euro NCAP, Europe’s new-car safety assessment programme.
LG Electronics is expanding its vehicle communications business based on technology it says ranks No. 1 globally in market share in telematics. The figure is the company’s estimate based on market research firm TechInsights. It recently applied a smart telematics solution based on the latest 5G communications standard, Release 16, to a mass-produced European vehicle model for the first time in the industry. It also released a “next-generation hybrid emergency call system” that supports 2G to 5G, in line with the move to mandate in-vehicle emergency call systems in Europe, China and the Middle East from next year. For the ultra-large flagship electrified SUV, the GV90, it is supplying a vehicle communications control system that handles connected car services such as remote control and over-the-air software updates.
Lee Sang-yong (이상용), head of LG Electronics’ VS Research Laboratory and a vice president, said, “We will continue to advance vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology that organically connects vehicles, road infrastructure and networks, and build a safer future mobility ecosystem.”
