Elon Musk (일론 머스크) said he would give every child in the United States 1 share of SpaceX next year. On Oct. 19, CNBC reported that Musk disclosed the plan in a post on X and said, "This will be the first one."
Official U.S. Census statistics put the number of children under 18 at 72 million as of July 1, 2025. That would require 72 million shares. Valued at $146.03 per share using last Friday's closing price, it amounts to about $10.5 billion. The value of the stake Musk would provide exceeds $10 billion.
Musk holds about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, based on U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings in August. Including compensation and stock options for which rights have not yet been confirmed, that rises to 6.4 billion shares, equivalent to 48.4 percent of the company's economic ownership.
He did not disclose how the shares would be distributed. SpaceX also did not respond to additional questions. Musk's remarks came shortly after Anthropic disclosed a plan to allocate 5 percent of its stake to a new public benefit fund. That stake could increase further as the company's valuation rises.
