Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Tab S9 series and Galaxy Tab S9 FE series will receive their final major Android update at the end of 2026. The devices will be supported up to Android 17-based One UI 9. After that, only security updates will remain.

On Oct. 17, IT outlet Engadget reported the affected models are the Galaxy Tab S9, S9+, S9 Ultra, S9 FE and S9 FE+. The devices launched in 2023 with One UI 5.1 and Android 13, and Samsung Electronics at the time promised four generations of major OS updates and five years of security patches. As a result, One UI 9 in 2026 will be the last major upgrade, and security updates are expected to continue until some point in 2028.

The previous-generation Galaxy Tab S8 series has already entered the final stage of major OS support. The Galaxy Tab S8, S8+ and S8 Ultra launched in February 2022, and Android 16-based One UI 8 is the final major update. Security patches are due to be provided until February 2027.

Support periods are shorter for budget models. The Galaxy Tab A9 and A9+ will also have Android 16 as their last major update. The two products launched in October 2023, but Samsung Electronics appears to have applied a relatively shorter support cycle for the lineup in line with its character as 'budget-oriented products'. Major OS updates have effectively ended, and security updates have one more year remaining.

Recently released new tablets have much longer support periods. Starting with the Galaxy Tab S10 series released in 2024, Samsung Electronics applied a policy of providing Android and security updates for seven years. The Galaxy Tab S11 and Galaxy Tab S12 series have also maintained the same policy. With the inclusion of the budget Galaxy Tab A11 and A11+ released in 2025 in the seven-year support program, currently sold models have become less likely to lose support in a short period of time.

A separate policy applies to rugged tablets aimed mainly at enterprise users. The Galaxy Tab Active5 launched in 2024 with Android 14, and is guaranteed four years of Android OS updates and five years of security updates. That means it can be upgraded up to Android 18, and security patches are expected to continue until 2029.

The timing of updates varies by model and region. Samsung Electronics does not roll out OS updates to all devices at the same time. That means even if One UI 9 is not yet visible on a Galaxy Tab, it has not been excluded from support. Users can check for pending updates through the Download and install option in the software update menu in Settings.

The support schedule shows clear policy differences by generation and price band within Samsung's tablet lineup. Major OS support is nearing its end for older premium products and some budget models, but newer devices released from 2024 have moved to a seven-year support system. That is expected to serve as a direct yardstick for tablet replacement cycles and decisions on long-term use.
