[DigitalToday reporter Dae-geon Seok (석대건)] LG Electronics said on Oct. 19 it unveiled a brand heritage video on an outdoor electronic billboard in New York's Times Square. The video's theme is "Life Asks, LG Answers." The company said the aim is to inform global customers of its journey of home appliance innovation since its founding in 1958 and its future vision.
The video will be shown at Times Square, on an electronic billboard at Piccadilly Circus in London, and on major OTT platforms. The washing appliance segment begins with the "Baekjo" washing machine (WP-181), South Korea's first washing machine, in 1969. In 2015, LG TwinWash combined a small top-loading washer beneath a drum washer. It reflected customer demand to wash different loads at the same time. Launched in 2020, the LG WashTower combined a washer and dryer in an integrated design to improve space efficiency.
The refrigerator segment starts with the "Nunpyo" refrigerator (GR-120) in 1965 and continues to Magic Space and KnockOn. Magic Space allows users to take out frequently used foods without opening the entire door. KnockOn lets users check inside by knocking on the door. Products with KnockOn have sold at a pace of about 1 unit per minute over 10 years since launch, surpassing a cumulative 5.3 million units. The design segment covers changes from wood-finished refrigerators from the GoldStar era to the LG Objet Collection and the ultra-premium built-in brand SKS.
The company said motor technology that underpins product innovation is also included in the video. LG Electronics' motor technology began with the development of a motor for electric fans in 1962. It evolved from the Inverter Direct Drive motor, which connects the wash tub directly to the motor, to the AI DD motor, which detects laundry characteristics and determines washing motions. More recently, the company developed LG Axium, an actuator, a drive component that serves as a robot joint, based on the technology.
The robot segment begins with the development of South Korea's first educational robot in 1983. It was followed by a cleaning robot in 2003 and the LG CLOi service robot in 2018, and this year the home robot LG Cloyd was unveiled. The company plans to expand into physical AI, artificial intelligence that judges and moves on its own in physical environments, and AI Home. It aims to gradually implement a "zero labor home" that reduces the burden of housework.
Ryu Ju-hyeon (류주현), head of HS marketing communication at LG Electronics, said, "We will share LG Electronics' heritage and future vision, built on innovation for a better life for customers, with global customers and continue to deliver differentiated brand value."
