Anthropic has decided to allocate 5 percent of the company’s equity to a fund for public-interest purposes.

On Oct. 18 local time, IT outlet TechCrunch and others reported that Anthropic said it will establish the “Anthropic Public Benefit Fund” to support projects for social good.

The fund will be set up as a separate legal entity wholly owned by Anthropic. The company is pursuing a plan to allocate 5 percent of total equity as the initial contribution, which requires shareholder approval. The structure also allows it to contribute an additional 2 percent stake each time the company’s valuation rises 50 percent. Anthropic said this would give it greater flexibility and scale in supporting public-benefit work.

The fund’s money could be used for large donations to traditional nonprofit groups or for direct support targeting specific groups. Anthropic has not finalized specific recipients or how funds will be deployed. It plans to disclose more information on the fund’s operating structure and decision-making system in the coming months.

The announcement comes as negative public sentiment toward the artificial intelligence industry grows. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei (Dario Amodei) has described the issues facing the industry as “fundamentally a crisis of trust.”

The impact AI could have on the labor market is also cited as a reason for creating the fund. Anthropic has already decided to spend $200 million, or about 67 billion won, to study AI’s effects on the job market. The company said a bolder approach may be needed given the pace of AI development, and that the new fund would provide flexibility to respond in various ways.

Anthropic’s recent valuation was put at about $960 billion as of May. On that basis, a 5 percent stake would be worth about $48 billion. Earlier, rival OpenAI also set up a nonprofit foundation holding equity worth several billion dollars in 2025 to support public-interest work.

It has not yet been disclosed which projects the fund will prioritize or who will hold decision-making authority. Specific operating principles and an execution system will be key yardsticks for judging the fund’s effectiveness.
