Elon Musk (일론 머스크), CEO of SpaceXSI, said the company would compensate users if the AI agent Grok makes purchase mistakes or leaks credit card information and users suffer losses. As services that let AI pay on users’ behalf spread, debate is growing over who should bear responsibility for accidents.
On Oct. 15, Business Insider reported that Musk promised on social media platform X (Twitter) that if Grok makes mistakes during a purchase process or leaks card information, the company would cover the losses. The comment came after a user said they had completed a flight booking using Grok. The user said they sent Grok a photo of their credit card instead of using a complex airline website, and the AI handled payment and booking confirmation.
Musk said a card information leak involving Grok has not happened yet, but said the company would take responsibility if problems arise. He did not disclose specific compensation criteria. It is unclear whether coverage would include unauthorized payments, booking errors, fraud by third-party sellers or additional losses from travel cancellations.
Musk’s pledge in particular differs from Grok’s current terms of service. The Grok bot terms stipulate that users are in principle responsible for transactions carried out by the AI agent and the costs that result.
OpenAI and Meta also generally place responsibility on users for transactions carried out by AI agents on their behalf.
Cases of AI agent mistakes have also continued. Shane Mac (셰인 맥), CEO of XMTP Labs, said that an AI financial assistant he built confused chat rooms with similar names and disclosed bank balances and spending details in a Slack channel for company executives.
Musk’s comments are drawing attention because they indicate an AI company would directly compensate users for financial losses. But it remains to be seen how the pledge will be carried out, as actual compensation procedures and whether the terms will be revised have not been confirmed.
This works well. If Grok @Bot makes a mistake with a purchase or leaks your card (never happened yet), SpaceX will make you whole.
