Customers of IBK Industrial Bank of Korea, Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank and Hana Bank will be able to issue and use mobile identification cards through each bank’s app from the 14th. Following six existing private providers including Samsung Electronics and Naver, access channels for mobile IDs will expand to the banking sector.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said on the 13th it has additionally opened the mobile ID service to four providers, including IBK, Shinhan, Woori and Hana, and will start the service from the 14th.

As a result, users of the banks’ apps will be able to issue and use IDs within the banking apps they use for everyday financial transactions, without using a separate mobile ID-only app.

The supported mobile IDs are six types: resident registration cards, driver’s licences, national merit registration cards, alien registration cards, disability registration cards and overseas Korean identity verification cards.

Mobile IDs issued in the banking apps can be used at existing mobile ID usage locations, including identity verification at bank counters, government office services, boarding domestic flights and adult verification.

Interior and Safety Minister Ho-jung Yoon (윤호중) said, "We expect people will be able to use mobile IDs more easily and quickly in familiar apps they use every day." He added, "We will continue to expand where they can be used."
