[DigitalToday reporter Jae-won Choi] As Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA6) draws closer to release, its predecessor GTA5 is back in the spotlight. Thirteen years have passed since its 2013 launch, but it is still seen as competitive for its strong open-world design and immersive direction.

On Oct. 10 (local time), IT outlet TechRadar published a hands-on account of replaying GTA5 on PS5 and PS4 ahead of GTA6's release. It gave high marks to the PS5 version's improved graphics and its use of the DualSense controller.

The PS5 version's Performance RT mode supports both ray tracing and 60 frames per second. Character models and some textures show their age, but Los Santos was still rated as a vivid space thanks to detailed environmental design, weather effects and improved frame rates.

DualSense haptics also boosted immersion. Resistance kicks in on the trigger during gear changes in vehicles, and the feel of firing in gunfights and road vibrations come through at the fingertips.

The story also took on new meaning over time. The outlet said that where it once focused on flashy criminal action, it now feels Franklin's realistic frustration and Michael's emptiness more clearly. It also cited the cinematic direction of early missions such as the jewelry store heist and chases as a continued strength.

Its cultural impact is also significant. GTA5 has been released across three console generations, and GTA Online has kept users' attention through ongoing updates. The Mount Chiliad conspiracy theory, UFO sighting stories, in-game music and various internet memes have also left a deep mark on online culture.

Still, it said areas needing improvement include a narrative that portrays female characters passively, awkward running controls, vaulting over obstacles and ragdoll physics effects.

GTA6 is scheduled to be released on Nov. 19. The outlet said GTA5 "remains an important benchmark for modern open-world games" and "remains a high barrier that the new title must surpass."
