Baemin’s closeout discount service run by Baedal Minjok boosted evening orders at participating stores. Baemin said on Thursday it will run a promotion highlighting the results to mark Resource Circulation Day on Sept. 6.
The service operates under a business agreement signed by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment with delivery platforms and the food industry. Baemin works with bakery brands such as Paris Baguette and Tous Les Jours to provide discount information on food nearing its consumption deadline and to support sales. Customers can buy items for at least 20 percent less than the regular price from 8 p.m. until each store’s closing time. About 300 stores currently run the service on Baemin.
In the promotion running from Thursday to Sept. 10, Baemin will offer a 7,000 won discount coupon that can be used to buy designated items from the closeout discount-only menus of Paris Baguette and Tous Les Jours. The coupons will be issued to the first 100 people each day for each brand.
The closeout discount service has drawn a response since its launch on June 11. Comparing orders at participating stores between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., the number of orders rose 11.7 percent versus the two months before its introduction. More than 1 in 10 customers reordered closeout discount items even though they can buy them only when a store has inventory.
The service provides inventory management and sales opportunities for partner merchants. Baemin said it plans to use the promotion to raise customer awareness of the service and contribute to spreading a resource-circulation culture. It also said it will continue to review expanding participating brands and stores.
Kim Joong-hyun (김중현), head of the sustainability management office at Woowa Brothers, said, "I hope closeout discounts become an everyday consumption habit that people naturally seek out every evening." He added, "We will expand the service so that more customers and stores can relate to and join the value of resource circulation."
