China sets national safety standards for Level 3 and 4 autonomous driving, mandatory from 2027
China has drawn up mandatory national safety standards for Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving systems, due to take effect on July 1, 2027. The rules apply to autonomous systems installed in M-class passenger vehicles and N-class commercial vehicles, excluding automated parking. They expand automakers’ safety responsibilities across the product lifecycle and require simulation, closed-course and real-road testing, as well as clearer driver-system interaction requirements.
