AI for Everyone service to launch this year, led by SKT, KT and Kakao
South Korea selected SK Telecom, KT and a Kakao consortium as operators for the nationwide “AI for Everyone” project, the science ministry said on Thursday. The consortiums will use their lead organisations’ strengths to launch public-facing AI services this year. Evaluations reviewed model and service competitiveness, GPU use and infrastructure plans, plus convenience, user acquisition strategies, quality and safety. The ministry plans contracts in September, a beta service and formal launch this year.

SKT, LG AI Research and Upstage advance to third evaluation of sovereign AI
SK Telecom, LG AI Research and Upstage have passed the second-stage evaluation of the government’s sovereign AI project and advanced to the next round, the Ministry of Science and ICT and NIPA said on Aug. 18. Motif Technologies, which joined through an additional call, did not advance. The ministry said it assessed teams using benchmark, expert and user scores, adding a public-use evaluation process.

Four teams in Korea\'s sovereign AI foundation model project ready for second review with different scale-up strategies
Four teams in the government-backed \"sovereign AI foundation model\" project have completed preparations for a second-round review, industry sources said. Two large companies have built models with more than 600 billion total parameters, comparable in size to major global open-weight models. Two startups opted for models of around 300 billion parameters, focusing on compute efficiency and task execution. All four use a mixture-of-experts structure and are pursuing different approaches to scaling up.
