Joint probe team uncovers 500 days of cyber breaches from big 3 telcos to Coupang and Tving
A joint public-private investigation team has spent the past 500 days probing cyber breaches that hit South Korea’s telecommunications and broadcasting industry. Its investigations covered SK Telecom’s USIM hacking incident, KT’s illegal femtocell-linked case and Tving’s account information leak, and it was also deployed to a Coupang breach. The team found repeated shortcomings in basic security practices such as account and authentication management, log retention and abnormal-sign detection, and identified cases of late or missing incident reporting.

PIPC fines KT 54 billion won, files complaint over obstruction
South Korea\'s Personal Information Protection Commission imposed a 53.98 billion won fine on KT over a personal data leak that led to unauthorised micropayment losses. It said actual financial damage was a major factor, but reflected the relatively small scale of the leak and limited data types. The watchdog also decided to file a complaint over KT\'s failure to report malware and alleged obstruction during the probe, and requested an investigation into LG Uplus over server actions.

Complex calculus for KT hacking fine puts revenue base, severity in focus
The government is expected to soon disclose its level of sanctions over KT’s hacking incident involving unauthorized small-amount payments. The Personal Information Protection Commission will review whether KT violated the Personal Information Protection Act and decide on fines, penalties and corrective orders. Key issues include what revenue base will be used, how the scale of the leak and the extent of safety-measure violations will be reflected, and whether delays in reporting and response problems will increase penalties.
