Getty Images drops plan to merge with Shutterstock
Getty Images has withdrawn its $3.7 billion merger plan with Shutterstock after UK competition regulators demanded the sale of Shutterstock’s global editorial business as a condition for approval. Getty’s board decided not to accept the divestment requirement and voted unanimously to terminate the merger agreement, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The deal was announced in January 2025 and would have created Getty Images Holdings.

OpenAI expands content partnership with Getty Images to bring licensed images into ChatGPT answers
OpenAI has signed a multi-year partnership with Getty Images to use Getty’s licensed images in ChatGPT and OpenAI’s search service, aiming to strengthen visuals in answers and search results. Getty CEO Craig Peters said high-quality licensed visual content makes AI-based search and discovery more useful and reliable. The deal follows Getty’s shift toward AI partnerships after earlier restrictions and litigation over AI-generated content.

Twelve Labs introduces video AI search on Gettyimagebank
Twelve Labs, a global video understanding AI company, said on March 23 it has integrated its multimodal AI model Marengo into Getty Images Korea’s image and video platform Gettyimagebank. The move allows users to search 270,000 pieces of content in natural language, targeting about 100,000 Getty Images Korea customers. The company said Marengo analyzes visual, audio and text information to find context-matching scenes.
