Standard Chartered considers folding parts of Zodia Custody business into investment bank
Standard Chartered is reviewing a plan to bring parts of Zodia Custody, a crypto custodian in which it holds a majority stake, into its investment banking unit. The bank is considering moving Zodia’s custody business into an in-house team that provides related services within its corporate and investment bank, while leaving Zodia to operate independently as a software-as-a-service platform for digital asset custody. A restructuring announcement could come this month.

Amazon AWS data centre hit by drone attack in UAE, finance and payment services disrupted
Amazon Web Services data centres in the United Arab Emirates were hit by a drone attack, knocking banking and payment systems offline on a large scale, CNBC reported on Tuesday. AWS said two data centres in the UAE and Bahrain were offline. The outage disrupted services including Careem and payment firms Alaan and Hubpay, while banks such as ADCB and Emirates NBD and software company Snowflake also faced disruptions.

Abu Dhabi firm launches first U.S. dollar stablecoin registered in UAE
Abu Dhabi Universal Digital has launched USDU, a U.S. dollar-based stablecoin after completing registration with the UAE central bank, Cointelegraph reported on Jan. 29. Cointelegraph said USDU is the first foreign payment token in the UAE to comply with the central bank’s payment token service rules and to be officially registered. The firm is under dual regulation and must meet standards for reserves, governance, disclosures and operational controls.
