Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centres in the UAE were hit by a drone attack, knocking banking and payment systems offline on a large scale, CNBC reported on Tuesday.

AWS said two data centres in the UAE and Bahrain were offline after the drone attack. This halted services including delivery and taxi platform Careem and payment companies Alaan and Hubpay.

Banks including ADCB and Emirates NBD and software companies such as Snowflake are also experiencing disruptions.

AWS is advising customers to move data to regions outside the Middle East. Separately, global energy markets are being jolted by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, pushing U.S., European and Asian stock markets lower and oil prices higher.
