MSIT to hold AI, digital challenge to tackle social problems

South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency will hold a 2026 challenge to address social problems such as climate disasters and issues affecting regions and youth using AI and digital technology. The contest has service development and idea discovery tracks. Participants can apply online until Sept. 30. The ministry will support the cost of using one of Naver, NHN or KT cloud services and award 10 finalists, with total prizes of 28 million won.

Kakao to split Kakaotalk and AI unit in bid to redesign growth structure

Kakao will separate its Kakaotalk and artificial intelligence businesses into a separately listed company, saying the market is not fully reflecting the value of its businesses. The company approved a human split into newly created KakaoAI and surviving KakaoX, with existing shareholders to receive shares in both. Kakao set targets for AI user growth and revenue through 2030 and also disclosed shareholder return plans, including a 300 billion won treasury share buyback and cancellation plan.

AI-driven M&A spreads as security market reshapes, highlighting hackers\' two faces

The security market is being reshaped around AI, spurring active mergers and acquisitions as companies seek to expand stakes and strengthen AI-based security capabilities while addressing risks from wider AI use. Security Week reported 21 deals worldwide in July, with the trend continuing in August. Fortinet agreed to buy Virtue AI. Brinqa bought FlexTrack, and Cribl acquired Radiant Security AI assets. The report also lists other corporate moves and security issues at home and abroad.
