South Korea launches open AI computing ecosystem to cut GPU reliance
South Korea is moving to build an \"open AI computing\" ecosystem that uses a range of computing resources instead of GPU-centric AI infrastructure. The science ministry held a meeting with local AI chip firms in Seoul as a follow-up to a July agreement with AMD. Officials and industry participants said the market is shifting from training to inference, making power use and operating costs key. The plan includes expanding domestic NPU use and building full-stack infrastructure.

MSIT to work with AMD on AI chips, help Korean NPUs expand globally
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT will cooperate with AMD to expand the domestic AI semiconductor ecosystem, including linking AMD CPUs and GPUs with Korean NPUs to build and test heterogeneous AI computing infrastructure. The ministry said it signed an MOU with AMD in San Francisco. The sides also plan cooperation in AI-based scientific research through NAIS. AMD plans to set up an AI Center of Excellence in South Korea and support university programs and joint research.

Naver Cloud, HD Korea Shipbuilding to build shipbuilding-focused cloud
Naver Cloud said on Sunday it will work with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering to build a cloud tailored to the shipbuilding industry. The companies plan to jointly create an AI and cloud environment optimized for the group’s design and production operations. They also aim to advance AI transformation across shipbuilding, including a next-generation ship platform (SDV) and physical AI. The partners will develop GPU infrastructure optimization and private cloud operations and form a joint CoE organization.
