Why weather forecasts keep missing: real-time data matters more than AI
AI is sharply accelerating weather forecasting, but analysts say accuracy still depends on how quickly and precisely the current state of the atmosphere is captured. Observation data from radar, satellites and other sources vary in resolution, update cycles and errors, making data assimilation critical. Short-lived thunderstorms are especially hard to predict. The WMO defines nowcasting as detailed local forecasts up to 6 hours ahead, requiring frequent updates within minutes.
