Banks face network-segmentation curbs on AI security as hackers use AI, chair says

Concerns were raised at a parliamentary audit that network-segmentation rules should be improved because they hinder financial firms from adopting AI-based security systems after a series of hacking incidents. Rep. Park Min-kyu said AI-driven monitoring is needed to analyze vast access logs and anomalies in real time. He cited seven hacks in a week starting Sept. 27 at Shinhan Bank and 68,000 cases of leaked personal data. Financial Services Commission Chairman Lee Eok-won said he agreed in principle and would review phased regulatory changes.

Applied Materials, BE Semiconductor Industries expand EPIC Center cooperation for AI packaging

Applied Materials said on Thursday it will expand its strategic partnership with BE Semiconductor Industries, with BESI joining Applied\'s EPIC Center as an innovation partner. The companies plan to widen cooperation beyond their joint development program launched in 2020 to cover new interconnect structures and applications. They will jointly optimise process and assembly solutions across advanced packaging, from wafer-level hybrid bonding to panel-scale integration, aiming to deliver jointly optimised results to customers earlier.

They called for Korea to design AI safety standards needed by both the United States and China, focusing on functional cooperation over value-based blocs. Participants also urged broader AI system evaluations beyond model scores and advocated Korea-specific benchmarks, risk-based management and stronger operational readiness in firms.
