As summer internships near their end, many interns’ biggest question is likely, “Will I receive an offer to convert to a full-time role?” AI is rapidly changing the hiring market and job requirements, and competition for jobs has grown fiercer. Still, former interns from Google, Tinder and AWS share advice that remains close to the basics. Interns who earn strong evaluations do more than complete assigned tasks. They consistently show a willingness to learn, build relationships, take initiative and keep records of results. On Aug. 13, IT outlet Business Insider summed up four common experiences of former interns who completed internships at big tech companies over the past two years and received full-time offers.

The first piece of advice is to clearly show a willingness to learn. Former Google intern Victoria Rozanska (빅토리아 로잔스카) said, “An attitude of continuously learning and accepting feedback was important to success.” Ryan Stewart (라이언 스튜어트), who became a full-time brand manager after an internship at Tinder, said, “At first it felt burdensome to approach senior leaders, but when I led with curiosity, the other person accepted it with a more open attitude.” Kevin Gutierrez (케빈 구티에레즈), who received a full-time offer after an internship at AWS, also stressed, “If you take on a project, you need to ask questions to deeply understand its background and goals.”

The second is building relationships. Nancy Qi (낸시 치), who completed three summer internships at Google, said, “I built teamwork by having lunch with colleagues every day. This increased motivation and immersion in work.” Stewart at Tinder tried to understand the company and its business by setting up one-on-one meetings with senior directors beyond his immediate team. Stewart added, “Even if an internship does not lead to a full-time job, these relationships become a future career network.”

The third is initiative. Rather than staying quiet because of limited experience, interns should present their perspective. Former Tinder intern Taylor Wong (테일러 웡) advised, saying, “My position as Gen Z was actually a strength,” and “Actively use the perspective of young users in the meeting room.” Tawfiq Mohammad (타우피크 모하마드), a former Google intern, said, “You should take responsibility for the project you are assigned over the summer as if it were your own, from start to finish.”

The last is to keep records of your work and achievements. Former Google intern Lydia Lam (리디아 램) advised, saying, “Leave many visible results such as designs, projects and deliverables.” Qi recorded weekly obstacles and how she resolved them, and included screenshots and links in her final reflection to show the problem-solving process. Stewart went further, finding gaps at the company during his internship and directly proposing a full-time role.

In the end, converting to a full-time role depends not only on luck but on how you build and show learning, relationships, initiative and evidence.
