Apple is expected to release two new laptops with different characteristics this fall for MacBook Pro users, a forecast said. According to IT outlet 9to5Mac, the targets are a MacBook Pro with an M6 chip and a MacBook Ultra with a new design.

Bloomberg News previously reported that Apple is overhauling its Mac lineup to target surging demand for high-performance computers driven by the AI boom. It forecast that Apple will sequentially roll out new versions across its full notebook and desktop lineup from this fall through next year, and also plans to release a MacBook Pro with an OLED display and touchscreen for the first time on a Mac.

The M6 MacBook Pro is being cited as the successor to the M5 model released last fall. It is expected to have no higher-end chip options or exterior revamp. Instead, the M6 could be the first Apple Mac chip to use a 2-nanometer process, meaning the upgrade could be larger than usual.

The design is likely to keep the framework of the current MacBook Pro. Existing strengths such as port configuration and long battery life could also continue.

The MacBook Ultra, by contrast, is expected to adopt a new, thinner and lighter design. It may include an OLED display, a touchscreen and a Dynamic Island. A cellular option may also be added. The actual product name, however, could still be MacBook Pro.

The MacBook Ultra is expected to come with an M5 Pro and M5 Max model rather than an M6. While they are not the latest chips, new Mac technology could be concentrated on this product.

Apple, meanwhile, aims to deliver performance optimized for AI work by unveiling its first M7 chip in the first half of next year.

Apple is already facing delivery delays for the Mac mini and Mac Studio, and more recently the MacBook Air, due to a memory shortage. If it fails to secure parts needed for a large-scale new MacBook launch on time, the release timing could also be pushed back.
