OpenAI cut the prices of Terra and Luna in its GPT-5.6 series about three weeks after unveiling them. On July 30 local time, CNBC reported that OpenAI lowered Terra fees by 20 percent and Luna fees by 80 percent, while keeping the price of the top-tier Sol model unchanged.
Terra was adjusted to $2 per 1 million input tokens and $12 per 1 million output tokens. Luna was set at $0.20 per 1 million input tokens and $1.20 per 1 million output tokens. The GPT-5.6 series consists of the most powerful Sol, the mid-tier Terra and the fastest Luna.
OpenAI appears to be responding to a situation in which corporate customers are sensitive to costs through the price cuts. Companies are becoming increasingly cautious about adopting expensive models whose return on investment is not clear. OpenAI is also facing competition from Chinese startups as well as Google and Microsoft.
OpenAI said it is focusing on raising capability and efficiency together so that each generation of intelligence can do more work at a lower cost.
