[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong (홍진주)] Apple Watch SE 3 is an entry-level model that is $150 cheaper than Apple Watch Series 11, but there is a clear reason for the price gap. It focuses on iPhone integration and basic smartwatch functions by trimming some key features and materials from higher-end models, as well as some battery performance.

Engadget reported on July 27 (local time) that Apple released Apple Watch SE 3 in September 2025 alongside Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3. SE 3 is positioned at a lower price point than higher-end models, but it is not simply the same product sold for less. The design, materials, feature set, and battery and charging performance reflect a number of compromises.

The first differences are in appearance and hardware. The Apple Watch SE lineup was designed from the start as an entry-level line with greater price accessibility. SE 3 also lowered manufacturing costs by excluding premium materials and some high-end design elements. Because design improvements and hardware upgrades offered in higher-end models were not applied as-is, the price could be lower.

The feature set has also been simplified. SE 3 offers core Apple Watch functions such as checking notifications, tracking workouts and linking with an iPhone, but some advanced features included in higher-end models are missing. For users who value the latest health features, premium sensors or a more upgraded display experience, Series 11 or Ultra 3 could be a better fit.

Battery life and charging speed also contribute to the price gap. SE 3 has been assessed as having shorter battery life and slower charging than the higher-end lineup. Users who actively use a smartwatch for sleep tracking, workout logging and checking notifications throughout the day may feel the difference in real use.

On the other hand, if only basic Apple Watch functions are needed, SE 3's compromises may be acceptable. For users who mainly check iPhone notifications on the wrist, log activity and use simple health-management functions, the additional features in higher-end models may not be necessary.

Ultimately, Apple Watch SE 3 is cheaper not because it is simply a lower-performing entry model, but because it keeps only essential functions while reducing premium elements. Apple segmented its lineup to offer an entry choice for first-time Apple Watch buyers or consumers looking to reduce the price burden, while steering users who want advanced features toward higher-end models.

Whether to buy SE 3 should be decided not only on price, but also on how important the missing features are to a user's habits. If the goal is basic iPhone integration and smartwatch functions, satisfaction for the price could be high. If longer battery life, faster charging and the latest health features are needed, a higher-end model could be a better choice.
