Nvidia is discussing providing payment guarantees worth about $250 billion for a large data centre project for OpenAI, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday.
The guarantees would help OpenAI lease a 10-gigawatt project being developed in southern Ohio by SoftBank's energy unit, the WSJ reported.
The overall cost of the project could exceed $500 billion including the chips to be used in the data centre, the WSJ reported, citing sources.
The U.S. government would control the power for the project, and Japan would provide funding under a recent trade agreement.
With Nvidia's guarantees, the SoftBank-owned developer could raise debt on more favourable terms. OpenAI has been negotiating to lease the data centre in recent weeks.
The $250 billion guarantee covers debt for leasing and building the data centre but excludes Nvidia chips. Nvidia has invested $30 billion in OpenAI and is also separately discussing a plan to support funding for up to $350 billion in chip purchases.
