[DigitalToday reporter Yoonseo Lee] OpenAI has added voice work features to the ChatGPT desktop app.

According to IT outlet 9to5Mac on July 23 (local time), the update lets users carry out tasks while talking through GPT Voice. The feature is based on the upgraded voice mode GPT-Live, which was first applied on mobile this month.

On desktop, GPT Voice can be used on both macOS and Windows 11, but Mac users can access a further expanded function. OpenAI explained in release notes that using Appshots with GPT Voice lets ChatGPT refer to the currently selected active window to grasp context more accurately.

GPT Voice also connects with OpenAI's computer-use function, local files and ChatGPT plugins. It is structured to read on-screen context, reference local materials and link other features while conversing by voice. Desktop voice features are supported on Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans.

It also works together with the remote function in ChatGPT for iOS. That makes it possible to continue voice work on desktop while linking to the mobile environment.

The change also fills a gap in the existing Mac app. Voice mode had been missing from the Mac app for some time, and the new GPT-Live version included in ChatGPT for iPhone and iPad was not applied. The update enables full-fledged voice mode again on Mac, with a broader feature range than before.

A key point of the update is that it lets users switch by voice among chatting, work tasks and coding within the ChatGPT desktop app. Users can use GPT Voice to describe what they are doing or check ongoing work, and continue into Codex work in a conversational way when needed.

This shows the ChatGPT desktop app is moving from a simple question-and-answer window to an execution environment that coordinates real work. If a method takes hold in which users convey work context by voice without keyboard input and use screens, files and development tools together, the range of uses for desktop AI assistants is expected to widen further.

OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT into a work execution tool by bundling voice, on-screen context, files, plugins and remote linking into the desktop app. The key point to watch going forward is not the voice mode itself, but how naturally ChatGPT can fit into real workflows in the desktop environment.

ChatGPT Voice is now in the desktop app. Control your computer and direct multiple agents running in ChatGPT Work or Codex, using just your voice. It's powered by GPT-Live, so it can speak, listen, and coordinate work in the app at the same time. Rolling out globally today… pic.twitter.com/ODZWKqecCf
