Apple Watch Ultra 3 is drawing fresh attention as Apple’s top wearable model after an unusual price cut. It is also being seen as reinforcing its competitiveness as the top model in Apple’s wearable lineup with satellite communications, long battery life and a large display.

TechRadar, an IT outlet, reported on Tuesday that Apple Watch Ultra 3 is cut in price in the United States to $649 from $799. In Britain, the price falls to 649 pounds from 749 pounds.

TechRadar said the price is the lowest since the product was launched. It said the adjustment is unusual because Apple products generally do not see large discounts. The outlet also introduced that it ranks Apple Watch Ultra 3 as the No. 1 product overall in its own smartwatch reviews.

The biggest strength is seen as its satellite communications. Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the first Apple smartwatch to support flagship-class satellite connectivity. It can assist communications where mobile signals do not reach, and it also offers an emergency rescue request function using satellites. TechRadar said it is particularly useful for users exploring or being active in places where communications are difficult, such as mountainous areas or remote regions.

Hardware changes are also a key factor. Apple Watch Ultra 3 applies a larger display than regular Apple Watch models and a wide viewing-angle screen. It is easier to check the screen and alerts from angles rather than straight on, and readability improves in dark environments, it said.

Battery performance is also a key differentiator. TechRadar said Ultra 3 can be used for up to 42 hours under normal conditions and rated this as its strongest competitive point compared with other Apple Watch models. It said frequent charging can be inconvenient when using the entry-level Apple Watch SE 2, while Ultra 3 can be used for long periods, greatly increasing usability.

Ultra 3 is also seen as an alternative not only for existing Apple Watch users but also for users of outdoor smartwatches such as Garmin. Basic health management and notification functions are sufficiently covered by regular Apple Watch models, but battery life, satellite communications and a large screen are differentiating features reserved for higher-end models, it said.

TechRadar said it is satisfied with Apple Watch SE 2, but Ultra 3 includes features that make an upgrade worth considering regardless of whether it is discounted.

The industry is also seeing Apple Watch Ultra 3 as a key product in Apple’s wearable strategy targeting outdoor use and long-duration use, beyond being simply a premium smartwatch. It expects that at the current point, when the biggest price cut since launch is applied, differentiators such as satellite communications, battery and display will become key criteria in purchase decisions.
