Shopify has applied AI agent payment technology developed by Visa, Mastercard and American Express to its payment service Shop Pay, The Information reported on Oct. 28.
It is a different approach from the AI shopping payment method being promoted by Stripe.
The report said the card companies are focusing on agent payments based on payment tokens for AI agents, which are substitute numbers that replace users' card information.
An AI agent authorized by a user makes payments directly from the user's card using the token. The agent cannot see the actual card information, and the user can still receive benefits such as card points and keep protections against fraudulent use.
Stripe issues a separate virtual card that can be used only once for an AI agent. The card is linked to the user's card account.
The Information said card companies have concerns about Stripe's method because virtual cards make it difficult to control the shopping and payment process and make it hard to identify which user an actual purchase is linked to.
