Nine of the 23 emerging fintech companies selected this year by global market research firm IDC were European. European fintech companies stood out across a range of areas, from core banking systems to payments, wealth management and financial regulatory compliance.

Fintech News Switzerland reported on Oct. 28 that 9 European companies made the "2026 IDC Fintech Top 100 Emerging Fintech" list. By country, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and France had 2 companies each, while Britain had 1.

Emerging fintech does not mean only new startups. IDC separately classifies companies that were not included in the previous year's rankings and evaluates them based on revenue from software, hardware and services supplied to financial institutions and others.

In Switzerland, financial software company Avaloq and BPC Banking Technologies, or BPC, were selected. Avaloq, a unit of NEC, supplies core banking and wealth management solutions to more than 170 financial institutions worldwide. BPC provides payments and digital banking services in more than 140 countries through its SmartVista platform.

In Germany, AI-based digital transformation specialist GFT Technologies and cloud financial software company SAP Fioneer made the list. SAP Fioneer provides core business systems to banks and insurers and has secured more than 1,200 customers in 18 countries.

In the Netherlands, Mambu, which runs a cloud-based banking platform, and Wolters Kluwer, which supplies regulatory compliance and risk management solutions, were selected.

In France, asset management and loan management software company Linedata and SBS, which provides core banking and payment systems, were included. In Britain, Smart Communications, which runs an enterprise customer communications platform, made the list.

IDC's fintech rankings are calculated based on the previous year's technology revenue from the financial industry. The top 100 companies' 2025 financial services revenue rose about 20 percent from a year earlier.

In the overall top 100, U.S. financial technology company FIS took first place. In the Enterprise 50, a ranking of companies that supply technology to a range of industries, Microsoft led the list.
