Pearl Abyss is presenting the first paid downloadable content (DLC) for "Crimson Desert" as it tests the potential for long-term monetisation. Crimson Desert surpassed 6 million copies in cumulative global sales since its release in March, but securing additional revenue has become important as sales that were concentrated on early success have declined. Pearl Abyss plans to extend the sales life of Crimson Desert through DLC and platform expansion.
According to the gaming industry, Pearl Abyss will launch globally on Oct. 30 the first DLC, "Unknown Journey", for the open-world action-adventure game "Crimson Desert Enhanced". That comes about 7 months after the main game’s release.
The DLC is characterised by expanding exploration beyond the existing continent focus to the sea and underwater areas. Users can build ships and sail the seas to explore new islands. It also adds content to make diving suits to discover underwater ruins and treasures or fight new enemies.
It also strengthens life-simulation content beyond combat and exploration. Users can build relationships with specific characters that can develop into romance and marriage, and a management system is introduced to earn goods by leasing and operating facilities. Housing features to design and decorate living spaces are also expanded.
Pearl Abyss delayed the release by 2 weeks from the original date of Oct. 16. The company explained that it needed additional development time to secure a stable play environment and content completeness. The DLC is priced at 27,800 won and will be sold on PC and console platforms.
Ahead of the release, it also made the shortlist for a global awards event. Crimson Desert Enhanced was nominated on Oct. 26 for the top prize, "Game of the Year", at the Golden Joystick Awards 2026. It is nominated in a total of 3 categories, including "PC Game of the Year" and "Best Soundtrack" announced earlier.
After the 6 million-copy hit, revenue slows; seeking a rebound with DLC
Crimson Desert sold 2 million copies within a day of its March 20 release and 5 million copies within 26 days. In June, cumulative global sales surpassed 6 million copies.
The early success was reflected in Pearl Abyss’ results. Crimson Desert revenue in the first quarter totalled 266.5 billion won. Over the same period, Pearl Abyss’ consolidated revenue was 328.5 billion won and operating profit was 212.1 billion won.
In the second quarter, however, Crimson Desert revenue fell about 49 percent from the previous quarter to 136.1 billion won. The company’s overall revenue and operating profit also declined to 192.6 billion won and 67.6 billion won, respectively. As sales of the main game slowed compared with the launch period, factors such as the timing of revenue recognition for physical package sales also affected quarterly results.
In August, Pearl Abyss lowered its revenue outlook for Crimson Desert this year to 468.9 billion won to 497.3 billion won from 644.1 billion won to 734.8 billion won. The adjustment reflected the timing of revenue recognition for physical package sales and sales trends.
Package games tend to concentrate main-game sales early after launch. To sustain revenue afterward, companies need to encourage additional purchases by existing users or secure new users. That is why paid DLC, which sells new stories, regions and game systems as separate products, is used as a key monetisation tool.
In August, Pearl Abyss provided "Crimson Desert Enhanced", which improved the story and gameplay, free to existing users, and is now presenting paid DLC. It is expanding its strategy from raising the quality of the main game to securing additional revenue using new content.
The DLC launch is expected to contribute to a rebound in fourth-quarter results. Meritz Securities estimated in a report Pearl Abyss’ third-quarter consolidated revenue and operating profit at 119.6 billion won and 33.5 billion won, respectively. It projected that in the fourth quarter, when DLC revenue is reflected, revenue and operating profit will rise to 159.4 billion won and 50.4 billion won.
Pursuing DLC and platform expansion in tandem; narrowing the revenue gap until the next title
Along with the DLC release, Pearl Abyss is also pursuing discounts for the main game and expansion to new platforms. It held its first discounted sale in August and is also preparing a Nintendo Switch 2 version, targeting release in the first half of next year.
Each strategy targets different demand. DLC sells new content to existing buyers, while discounts target users who delayed purchases due to price 부담, and platform expansion is a way to secure users on new devices.
This can be seen as a strategy to generate additional revenue at multiple points after sales concentrated at the time of the main game’s launch. In particular, sailing, outpost management and housing added in this DLC provide new activities for users who have completed the main game. The aim is to encourage existing users to return while expanding revenue through sales of new content.
The gap until the next title’s release also needs to be considered. Pearl Abyss is developing "DokeV" with a target release in the second half of 2028. Until a new title arrives, sustaining revenue from Crimson Desert and the existing flagship title "Black Desert" is an important issue.
Still, it is not easy to maintain the large-scale revenue seen at the time of the main game’s release with paid DLC alone. Since costs arise to continuously develop additional content, sales performance and development burden must be considered together. Ultimately, the key task is how much it can reduce performance volatility between major new releases while securing additional revenue through DLC and expansion to new platforms.
Lee Hyo-jin (이효진), an analyst at Meritz Securities, analysed that "considering recent trends in PKG games, an estimate of 1 DLC per year aligns with the trend." Meritz Securities reflected the possibility of an additional DLC release at the end of 2027 in its performance forecast, factoring in that the first DLC launch was brought forward earlier than expected.
This DLC is expected to be the first test of whether Crimson Desert can turn its early success into sustained revenue. The key question is whether it can supplement a revenue structure concentrated on one-off blockbuster success and build a stable revenue base until the next title is released.
