The U.S. government has applied Google’s Gemini and Elon Musk’s Grok to America.gov, an AI-based portal introduced to help citizens use federal government services.

On Sept. 29, CNBC and other outlets reported that U.S. Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia (조 게비아) said in an interview just before the launch of America.gov that it is using AI technology from Google and SpaceXAI. The new portal is designed for AI to search information from about 29,000 federal government websites and provide answers tailored to users’ questions.

Gebbia said about 40 million people use government websites each day to handle various tasks. He said the goal is to improve the existing complex experience of online government services. Users can ask about government programs or welfare and administrative services in everyday language through a chatbot-style screen.

America.gov was unveiled at an event held in Washington, D.C., at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium on the day. Attendees included President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, as well as administration officials and people from the technology industry. Trump described America.gov as “not just a website but a project to rebuild government services for the 21st century.”

The government plans to expand functions so users can handle actual administrative tasks through a single interface, beyond simple information searches such as passport renewal or Medicare enrollment. Trump also signed an executive order directing federal agencies to link public-facing services with America.gov.

Details of the technical setup, including what roles Google and SpaceXAI each take on America.gov, were not disclosed.
